S. Thomas’ trounce Dharmapala

A match bag of 6 for 24 by Suranga Pieris helped S.Thomas’ to score an 118 runs win over Dharmapala in the inter school cricket match at Mt Lavinia yesterday.

In reply for S.Thomas’ 191, Dharmapala who were 33 for 2 overnight, were bowled out for 129. S. Dewapura (37), C.Seneviratne (14) and C.Nayanjith (16) helped Dharmapala to score 129. For S.Thomas’ N. Ratwatte (3 for 20), G. Fernando ( 2 for 11) and S.Pieris (2 for 10) bowled best. S.Thomas’ batting a second time made 130 for 8 dec. thanks to useful knocks by U. Fernando (13), J.Sriwardena (25) and Nilanka Peiris 46 (7 fours and 2 sixes). Thomian skipper U. Fernando, who declared before the tea interval, set Dharmapala a target of 175 to win, but were able to bowl them out for 57. N.Ratwatte (2 for 12), N.Peiris (4 for 14) and R. Gunawardena( 2 for 12) helped S.Thomas’ to gain this 118 runs victory.

Walkers and Mackinnons retain sevens rugby title

Two tries and four conversions by Nishantha Chanaka helped the combined Walkers and Mackinnons team to score a 28 ( 4 goals ) to 5 (one try) win over Citadel Kandy and retain the title for another year in a one sided Travel Trade rugby sevens final at Longden place yesterday.The winners led 21 -5 at half time.

This tournament was organised by Travel Trade SC and sponsored by Walkers Travels .

Walkers and Mackinnons drew the first blood in the third minute of play when they worked the line from a scrum which saw Nishantha Chanaka going over for a try.

This try was converted by Chanaka to give Combined Walkers and Mackinnons a 7 -0 lead. Citadel hit back with vengeance in the fifth minute when they were able to reduce the lead to 7-5 through a try by S. Priyantha.

Three minutes later Walkers and Mackinnons were able to increase the lead to 14-5 through a try by Sriyan Yehiya who had an outstanding tournament. At the stroke of half time Walkers and Mackinnons went further ahead through a try by Nishantha Chanaka which helped them to gain a 21-5 lead at lemons.

Citadel did well to give a hard time to Walkers and Mackinnons combined team after the turn around where they were able to reduced the winners for a solitary try which came in the fourth minute of play through Lakmal Abeysuriya. This was the only scoring done in the second half to give the defending champions a 28-5 win at the long whistle.

In the semi finals Walkers and Mackinnons scored a runaway 42 ( 7 tries and 1 try) to nil win over Hemas Tours and Citadel Kandy scored a 28( 4 goals) to 5 (1 try) to win over Akiten and Spence.


Two racing drivers suspended

Two racing drivers, Upulwan Serasinghe and Kumar Samarasinghe have been suspended for three and five meets respectively, by the Committee of Inquiry comprising Bandula Weerasinghe, Mahinda Wickremaratne and Dayendra Samarasinghe who found them guilty after a stewards inquiry of violating the rules and regulations of the Caltex Katukurunda 97 Race Meet held on June 15.

No. 75, Upulwan Serasinghe - Ford Laser - that his vehicle had been fitted with a single barrel (damaged) silencer, where according to the specifications furnished by the local agents of the manufacturer the standard exhaust is twin barrel. This is a clear violation of the rules governing the meet.

No. 68 - Kumara Samarasinghe - Mazda 323 - The findings disclose that the Air Cleaner element has been removed and the means of operation of the twin choke progressive carburettor has been changed from vacuum diaphragm to mechnical, both of which are at variance with the rules.

Ninth wicket stand helps SSC to 240/8

An unbroken century stand for the ninth wicket helped SSC to reach 240 for 8 against Tamil Union in the final of the Board Under 24 cricket tournament at Maitland Place yesterday. After being sent into bat by Tamil Union skipper Indika De Saram, SSC collapsed to 140 for 8 before the ninth wicket pair of Suresh Perera (51 n o) and Chaminda Boteju(51 n o) denied the visitors of any further success. Both batsmen mixed caution with aggression as they completed half centuries and guided SSC to safety.

Perera faced 99 deliveries and struck eight fours while Boteju completed his half century in only 66 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.

Earlier in the day Tamil Union opening bowler R Priyadarshana ripped the heart out of the SSC batting when he captured four for 47. He was well supported by spinner S. Kumar who claimed two for 26 and helped to put the skids on the SSC innings. Apart from Malintha Perera (30),Anushka Polonowita (33) and skipper Suranjith Silva (20) the rest of the SSC batsmen failed to come to terms with the Tamil Union bowlers.

Kotmale Challenge Trophy

CIS vs Leighton Park final

The finals of the Inter International Schools Under 15 cricket tournament for the Kotmale Challenge Trophy will be played between Colombo International School and Leighton Park at Nomads grounds today.

In the semi finals Colombo International School beat Asian International School by 39 runs and Leighton Park beat Wcycherly IS by 8 wickets.

Eight teams for Mazenod football tourney

Eight teams will take part in the under 19 schools invitation football tournament, conducted by the Old Mazenodian Football Association played for the Don Paul Henry Patrick Memorial Trophy, starting on November 3rd.

All matches will be played at the De Mazenod College grounds at Kandana.

The participating schools and their groupings are:

Group A - De Mazenod, Royal, St. Anthony’s Wattala, St. Peter’s.

Group B - St. Benedicts, Zahira, St. Joseph’s, D. S. Senanayake.

The semi-finals will be played on November 10 and 14. All matches will get underway at 4 p.m.


Trans Asia win squash c’ship final

Top seeded, Samantha Jayashantha of Trans Asia Hotel won the Men’s open and Wing Commander Wimal Fernando of Aitken Spence Travels won the Men’s Intermediate Over-35 event, at the 8th annual Travel Trade Sports Club squash championships, sponsored by Trans Asia Hotel, concluded at the hotel’s courts on October 30. Trans Asia Hotel with 260 points won the overall team championship.

Final: Samantha Jayshantha (Trans Asia) beat Anura Hewage (Trans Asia) 9/5, 9/0, 1/9, 4/9, 9/5.


Matale win women’s hockey title

Matale came from behind to beat Schools by 2 goals to nil winning the 8th Women’s National Hockey championship, concluded at the Astro Turf at Reid Avenue.

In a group match, the Schools XI beat Matale 5/1.

In the semi-finals, Matale beat Colombo by 5 goals to nil, and Schools beat Kandy 2-1.

In the play-off for the third place, Colombo beat Kandy in a tie breaker.


Tri Star win two matches

Tri Star Sports Club won two of their cricket matches, while the other match ended in a no-decision in the Division 3 tournament conducted by the Colombo DCA.Tri Star beat Habib Sports Club and Old Sastralians and were held to a No-decision by Khettarama Sports Club.

Tri Star beat Habib Sports Club by 70 runs. Tri Star SC -189 all out. (Buddhika Perera 32, Manjula Silva 26, F. Samath 4 for 32, W. Chathuranga 3 for 35).

Habib SC - 119 all out. (F. Samath 28, W. Chathuranga 34, Nishantha Dias 2 for 13, Kosala Welgama 2 for 35).

Tri Star beat Old Sastralians SC by 6 wickets. Old Sastralians SC-180 all out. (P. Silva 80, M. Nimal 24, Nishantha Dias 2 for 34, Kosala Welgama 4 for 20).

Tri Star SC-184 for 4 (Buddhika Perera 102, Manjula Silva 46 not out, A. Anuruddha 2 for 38).
