St. Benedict's - Ananda Encounter

Exchanges were even in the St. Benedict's Ananda inter schools encounter which began at Kotahena yesterday.

Batting first St. Benedicts reached 190/8 off 79 overs before making a declaration. Ajantha Weerapuli (46), Asanka Fonseka (43) Chandrik Ajireen (33) and Pradeep Hewage (32) were the chief scores.

Right-arm off spinner of Ananda Thilan Samaraweera was again among the wickets claiming 5 for 53.

Ananda in laboured hard for 15 overs to reply with 32 for 1 by the close.

Royal vs. D. S. Senanayake

The inter schools cricket match between Royal and D. S. Senanayake ended in an exciting draw at Wijerama Mawatha yesterday.

Set to make 182 for victory, D. S. Senanayake scored 137/6 by the close.

Earlier, DSS were all out for 197 in their first innigns in reply to Royal's 214 all out on Friday.

Batting for the second time Royal went for quick runs and made 163/7 declared. Kavinda Nanayakkara top scored for the Royalist with a fluent 77.

Chasing 182 for victory the home side started-off well but lost their way to finally put up shutters and settle for a draw.

St. Thomas' Matara vs. Maris Stella

A spirited reply in the second innigns by St. Thomas' Matara helped them force a draw against Marist Stella at Negombo yesterday.

Trailing by 112 runs St. Thomas' gave an improved batting display in the second innings to be 222/9 by the close.

S. Weerasinghe led the way with a stylish 69. He was well supported by S. Sameera who remained unbeaten on 56 runs.

Marist Stella - 257/8 declared.

Isipatana Coast to Victory

Isipatana coasted to a 10 wicket victory over De Mazenod at Kandana yesterday.

After hitting an imposing 240 on the first day, Isipatana bundled out the Mazenodians for only 81 runs. Nuwan Zoysa (5/26) and R. Sridhar (5/18) were the chief destroyers.

Following on, the Mazenodians fared a little better, scoring 166, but were unable to prevent the visitors from recording an easy win. Zoysa and Sridhar were again among the wickets claiming (4/49) and (4/47) respectively.

Isipatana - 240 & 8/0.

De Mazenod - 81 all out. (Nuwan Zoysa 5/26, R. Sridhar 5/18) & 166 all out. (C. Seneviratne 21, M. Williams 21, S. Perera 44, N. Zoysa 4/49, R. Sridhar 4/47, A. Wanigasekera 2/37).


St. Thomas' vs. Trinity

Kumar Sangakkara who missed a double century by just 2 runs in a drawn game against S. Thomas' at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Continuing from 30 for 2, Trinity were all out 298 in 85 overs. Kumar Sangakkara scored 198 runs with 29 boundries and two sixes.

Sangakkara stayed 220 minutes at the creas, and was associated in a 71 runs partnership with N. Ekanayake for the 5th wicket and 61 runs for 4th wicket with S. Gamage.

Chasing difficult target of 249 runs to win the Thomians were 54 for 1 at close.

Trinity 71 and 298 in 85 overs 339 minutes A. De Raffal 19, S. Gamage 22, N. Ekanayake 15, K. Sangakkara 198, D. Siriwardana 2/27, D. Gunawardana 3/80.

St. Sebastian beat Wesley by 10 wickets in their match at Moratuwa yesterday.

Wesley batting first were and bundled out for 62 runs and St. Sebestian's replied 247 for 7 declared.

In the second innings Wesley scored 185 runs. Tail-ender Prasad Amrasekara scored 53.

Nimesh Perera of St. Sebastian took more wickets and scored 124 runs.

Nalanda Forces a Draw Against Mahinda

Mahela Jayawardena hit a quick century to help Nalanda to force a draw against Mahinda at Campbell Place yesterday.

Jayawardena who failed in the first innings, scored a stylish 118 and helped Nalanda to an imposing 264/4 in their second innings. Jayawardena's innings had 14 fours and 3 sixes.

Earlier, Mahinda who did well to overtake Nalanda's first innigns total of 175/9 decl. were eventually bowled out for 209.

Nalanda - 175/9 decl. & 264/4 (Shantha Kalawitigoda 21, Ranesh Handunhetti 44, Mahela Jayawardene 118, Shanuka Dissanayake 24 n.o.
