Donald Jayantha marks 40 years behind the camera

Donald Jayantha’s name may not always appear in the spotlight, yet for four decades his fingerprints have quietly shaped the rhythm, discipline and storytelling of Sinhala cinema. This year marks 40 years since Donald Jayantha first stepped onto a film set, beginning a journey defined by dedication, consistency and an extraordinary body of work that has supported more than six decades of Sri Lankan filmmaking.

His journey began in 1986 with the film ‘Pooja’, where he worked as a second assistant director and assistant producer. What started as a single opportunity soon grew into a lifelong career behind the camera. From 1987 onward, he deepened his experience under director Priyantha Kolombage, beginning with ‘Dahena’ and continuing through a remarkable run of productions including ‘Mahamera Usata’, ‘Parliament Jokes’, ‘Asai Man Piyambana’ and ‘Adaraneey Kathawak’, followed by ‘Angelica’, ‘Rush’, ‘One Shot One’, ‘Suwanda Denuna Jeevithe’ and ‘Dedunu Akase’.
Over the years, Donald Jayantha built a rare record in the local industry, assisting in the direction of 65 films, an achievement that reflects both endurance and trust earned across generations of filmmakers.
While best known as a veteran assistant director, his creative journey also moved into directing and producing. He directed Pravegaya and May, and served as co-director of ‘Sihinayaki Aadare’. He also stepped into production as co-producer of ‘Adarani Vassana’, proving his versatility across multiple roles in filmmaking.
Recognition followed his dedication. At the 2011 Catholic Film Awards, he received the OCIC Award for Direction and he has been honoured at the Presidential Awards Ceremony and several other industry award platforms. Beyond filmmaking, he has even appeared on screen in numerous productions,
further expanding his contribution to cinema.
His connection to the industry traces back to an early introduction to veteran journalist and filmmaker Dharmasiri Gamage by his mother, a moment that helped shape the path he would follow for the next four decades.
Throughout his career, he has had the rare privilege of working alongside and directing or assisting in directing, almost every major star of contemporary Sinhala cinema, as well as many legendary figures. His collaborations span icons such as Gamini Fonseka, Malani Fonseka, Joe Abeywickrama, Vijaya Kumaratunga, Sanath Gunathilake, Jeevan Kumaratunga, Kamal Addararachchi, Ravindra Randeniya, Tony Ranasinghe, Somasiri Dehipitiya, Cyril Wickramage, Anoja Weerasinghe, Iranganie Serasinghe, Veena Jayakody, Sriyani Amarasena, Denawaka Hamine, Nita Fernando, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Ranjan Ramanayake, Sabeetha Perera, Roshan Ranawana, Jackson Anthony, Mahendra Perera, Sriyantha Mendis, Uddika Premarathna, Pubudu Chathuranga, Hemal Ranasinghe, Chulakshi Ranathunga, Udari Warnakulasooriya and Kusum Renu, among many others, an achievement that reflects the trust and respect he has earned across generations of
performers.
In recognition of his contribution to cinema, he has received numerous honours including accolades at the Derana Film Awards and recognition from several other institutions, marking a career celebrated by both peers and the wider film industry.
Today, as Donald Jayantha celebrates 40 years in Sri Lankan cinema, his career stands as a testament to the unsung heroes behind the camera, professionals whose passion, discipline and quiet commitment keep the wheels of filmmaking turning.
Looking ahead, he continues to remain active behind the camera. Several new films directed by him, ‘Suriya Sulanga’, ‘Mega Warsha’, ‘Sergeant Punchisoma’, ‘Sihina Abhisheka’, ‘Agni Jaya’, ‘Adara Geethaya’ and ‘Hamini’ are currently awaiting release, promising to add a new chapter to his long and dedicated journey in
Sri Lankan cinema.
