‘Guru Geethaya’ at Elphinston

‘Guru Geethaya’, Lankan stage play based on world renowned Russian writer Tchinguiz Aitmatov’s novel, ‘The First Teacher’ will go on the staged on Saturday, March 21 at 3.30 and 6.45 pm. at Elphinstone Theater, Colombo 10.

Directed by Prof. Mangala Senanayake, the play revolves around a teacher Duishen and a teenage girl in a small Kirghiz village Altynai who wanted to go to school to learn to read and write and end up becoming a great personality. The communist youth Duishen, and his great pupil Altynai, the play gives a refreshing interpretation to the generation of teachers and students around the world.

The play stars Jayani Senanayake, Anuradha Mallawaraachchi, Sudharshana Krishantha, Maali Jayaweerage. Costume design done by veteran actor Kamal Addararaachchi, music by Prabuddha Buddipriya, choreography by Jayani Senanayake and set design and make up by Chathura Dasanayake, Nayanatharade Silva and Yasantha Karunaratne.

Prof. Senanayake’s play ‘Kirata Adana Sathwayo’ staged in 1980s won 13 Youth Awards. He went on to produce his other plays including ‘Juliet Caesar’, ‘Magul Kema’, ‘Sindukara Kavi Naluwa’ and few others.
