A seemingly perfect middle-class dream slowly unravels under the weight of addiction, temptation and misunderstanding in ‘Wife’, the latest film by young, award-winning filmmaker Sameera Naotunna, now screening in cinemas islandwide.

Marking his return to the big screen following the multi-awarded ‘Motor Bicycle’ and ‘Sihina Nelum Mal’, Sameera shifts from action-driven narratives to an intimate domestic drama that examines the emotional fault lines of contemporary married life.

Hemal and Udari in ‘Wife’

At the heart of the story are ‘Madhawa’ and ‘Nirmala’, a modern-day couple striving to build a respectable family life despite mounting financial pressures. Hemal Ranasinghe delivers a layered performance as the playful yet irresponsible Madhawa, while Udari Warnakulasuriya portrays Nirmala, a sensitive and emotionally vulnerable wife longing for stability and motherhood.

As Madhawa struggles with unstable income and juggles multiple part-time jobs, cracks begin to appear in their marriage. His involvement in questionable relationships, particularly his inappropriate closeness to actresses while working as a film and commercial advertising director, pushes their relationship to breaking point. When Nirmala discovers his betrayal, she returns to her mother’s home in the village, leaving Madhawa to grapple with guilt and desperation.

Though he repeatedly pleads for reconciliation, her trust remains shattered. What unfolds when she returns for ‘one last time’ becomes the emotional crux of the film.

Unlike the kinetic energy of ‘Motor Bicycle’, ‘Wife’ delves deep into the psychology of relationships. Director Sameera explores the silent struggles within homes, financial insecurity, social media distractions, extramarital temptations and the emotional isolation that often define modern marriages. The film offers a reflective look at how fragile relationships can become in a fast-paced, morally distracted world.

The supporting cast includes Dineth de Silva, Veena Jayakody, Lakshman Mendis, Priyantha Seneviratne, Nethali Nanayakkara, Rukshana Dissanayake, Piyumi Botheju, Priyantha Lalith, Hiruni Ranasinghe and Dinithi Walgama.

Behind the scenes, cinematography is handled by Chinthaka Somakeerthi, with art direction by Dhammika Hewaduwatte and makeup by Buwaneka Ranawaka. Sound design is managed by Aruna Priyantha Kaluarachchi, while editing and colour grading are by Tissa Surendra. Music direction is by Chitral Somapala, who also lends his voice alongside Rohitha Jayalath to the film’s playback songs, written by Sameera Naotunna.

Assistant director Prasanna Wijesinghe, production manager Harold Karunaratne and executive director Sanjeewa Fernando form part of the core production team, with costume design by Madhawi Dissanayake and still photography by Amal Rose.

With ‘Wife’, Sameera Naotunna presents not just a story of a troubled marriage, but a mirror reflecting the emotional turbulence of modern relationships, where love survives, falters and sometimes seeks redemption.
