Cultural Bridge between two nations: Nilan Maligaspe marked for lifetime contribution

Celebrated dancer and cultural ambassador Nilan Maligaspe, whose artistic journey has long served as a bridge between India and Sri Lanka, marked two significant milestones in his career with a ceremony steeped in gratitude and reflection. The occasion commemorated the 41st anniversary of his artistic career and the 31st anniversary of his dance academy, recognising decades of sustained contribution to cultural exchange between the two nations.
In recognition of his role in strengthening bilateral cultural ties, Maligaspe was presented with a commemorative plaque, alongside the launch of a special commemorative book produced in collaboration with the India–Sri Lanka Foundation, the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC). The publication documents his extensive work in promoting cross-cultural dialogue, including exchange programmes, artistic productions, media engagement, archival material and landmark projects undertaken over four decades.
A highlight of the event was Maligaspe’s tribute to Professor Anukuran Dutta, Director of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (ICCR), Colombo, in recognition of his steadfast support and commitment to fostering cultural cooperation. With deep appreciation, Maligaspe formally presented Prof. Dutta with the commemorative publication, acknowledging the trust, encouragement and institutional backing extended to his initiatives over the years.
Describing the moment as both personal and symbolic, Maligaspe noted that the journey of cultural exchange is sustained not by individuals alone, but by enduring partnerships built on mutual respect and shared artistic values. The ceremony stood as a reaffirmation of the enduring cultural bond between India and Sri Lanka — one nurtured through dance, dialogue and decades of collaboration.
