Nil Katarolu: A flower worth savouring
With its distinctive blue, it is found everywhere – in teas, drinks and desserts, boasting of many health benefits. How far are these health attributes of this bright blue flower, Nil Katarolu (Clitoria ternatea L.) true?
This flower, along with every other part of this plant, has a long history in ayurvedic medicine. We learn from ayurvedic experts that while the root is used for its antifungal properties, the flower and leaves are included in herbal mixes or kasaya to promote overall health and boost immunity.
Scientific research, meanwhile, confirms what tradition has long suggested: that Nil Katarolu is packed with bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, quercetin and kaempferol, which offer multiple health benefits.
These health benefits are:
- Powerful antioxidant which protects cells from damage caused by free radicals.
- Supports brain health and may enhance memory and learning by aiding neurotransmitter function.
- Blood sugar management through slow sugar absorption and improvement in insulin activity.
- Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity and may help protect against infections and reduce inflammation.
- Supports liver and kidney function and contributes to healthy skin and hair.
When looking at the important question whether Nil Katarolu is safe, research indicates that it is, for regular consumption. Animal studies report very low toxicity and typical doses do not produce harmful effects.
The preparation of Nil Katarolu or blue pea tea is simple. Pour hot water over fresh or dried petals of the flower and watch the water transform into a gorgeous deep blue. A drop of lemon turns it into purple due to a natural pH change.
Some enjoy sipping plain blue pea tea, while others add a dash of honey. Many also use Nil Kararolu as a colouring for other beverages and desserts.
Therefore, whether brewed as a calming tea, used as a natural food colour or explored for its traditional medicinal uses, Nil Katarolu is a plant with heritage and health benefits. Beautiful, versatile and beneficial, it is more than just a pretty flower.
