The lecture looks at the preservation and conservation of documentary heritage (library and archival material) of both private and public collections. In the process of preservation, the identification of the causes of deterioration such as biological, chemical, physical and accidental factors is of vital importance.

Preventive measures in safeguarding collections, such as good housekeeping and avoidance of deterioration factors, first-aid and restoration processes as well as transferring data within the same medium or into another medium, will be addressed.

A retired Director General of the National Archives, Dr. Wettasinghe has a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry from Punjab University, India and Ph. D. in Archival Studies from the University of London, UK.  She is a member of the Advisory Council of National Archives, Chair of the Advisory Committee on Preservation and Conservation of the National Library, and was a member of the Executive Council of the International Council on National Archives.
