As the 125th year celebrations continue at Ladies’ College Colombo, a grand musical extravaganza  titled ‘Musical Fest’ will unfold  from September 17 – 20 at the Ladies’ College Hall bringing together junior and senior students, to relive excerpts from 10 unforgettable Broadway and Disney musicals that have lit up the LC stage in years past.

The music begins on September 17, as the Primary School takes the stage, in a show directed by Melanie Bibile and assisted by Bhagyanee Benedict. The young stars will dive under the sea with the Little Mermaid, singing beloved favourites like  ‘Part of Your World’ and   ‘Under the Sea’. Costumes are by Jojo.

The Grade 5 students will then sweep the audience into the Arabian Nights and Aladdin.

On September 18, the Middle School production directed by Sean Amarasekera and assisted by Jovanka Jayaweera, invites the audience to waltz down memory lane with  ‘The King and I’ with songs like  ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Shall We Dance?’  But the tone shifts as Grade 7 takes on the thought-provoking  ‘Bully’ – a powerful portrayal of peer harassment in high school. The mood later lifts as Sister Mary Clarence belts out  ‘Raise Your Voice’ and ’Take Me to Heaven’ from ‘Sister Act’.

The show on September 19 and 20 by the Upper School also under the direction of Sean Amarasekera with Jovanka Jayaweera presents four musical excerpts, from the timeless  ‘West Side Story’, to ‘The Prince of Egypt’.

The second act begins with the haunting  ‘Bells of Notre Dame’ from ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’. And then the volume is turned up for a blast from the past with  ‘Grease!’ with the infectious energy of ‘Greased Lightning’ and  ‘We Go Together’.

Music Fest is produced by Anushka Abhayaratne. Choreography for both juniors and seniors is by Ayushka Nugaliyadda, while funding and publicity are being managed by Taanya Tranchel.

Tickets are available at the School office on weekdays from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.–12 noon.
