View(s):Unsung heroes in cardiac care
There are certain comments and criticisms regarding teaching hospitals in the country. However, there are also best practices that often go unrecognised and unappreciated.
A few months ago, I took my mother to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital as her pulse rate had dropped drastically. She was admitted to the Dr. Handy Memorial Cardiology Unit and urgently required a pacemaker. Typically, pacemakers cost around one million rupees—a significant amount to arrange in a short time.
However, when I spoke to Dr. Lukshman, the Consultant Cardiologist, he reassured me that there were pacemakers available at the hospital, and there was no need for us to purchase one. Without delay, the doctor and his team successfully implanted the pacemaker and, in doing so, gave my mother her life back.
What moved me most was learning that this generous service is not limited to my mother alone. Many patients have received life-saving care and devices free of charge. The dedication and compassion shown by the doctor and his team at the Dr. Handy Memorial Cardiology Unit are truly commendable.
We must also acknowledge the invaluable support of donors who make such services possible. Let us all extend our heartfelt gratitude and fullest support to the humanitarian efforts of the Dr. Handy Memorial Cardiology Unit—a place that truly brings people back to life.

Why chase after fossil fuel when electric vehicles should be the future
One of the news items that has created a storm-in-a-tea-cup in recent times seems to be the opening of the import barrier on vehicles and the ensuing argument over a tax issue on certain electric vehicles.
As a person who is quite conversant with the government machinery and how arguments are built on trivial dots rather than the bigger picture, I feel electric vehicles are the future rather than running behind fossil fuel which is bound to run out sooner than later.
Considering the environmental impact of it also is helpful on a local and global scale. Even in the short term, usage of electric vehicles is beneficial to the environment and the country can save billions of valuable dollars of which our country is in a shortfall even at this very moment.
In this context, the President, who is also the Minister of Finance should heed the reality of fossil vs electric and arrive at a prudent conclusion.
