Teeming crowds in queues jostle for breathing space

While the enormity of organising an event on the scale of the Dalada Vandana is understandable, the way those queuing up to enter the Dalada Maligawa were caged in passages with high iron railings left many exasperated and angry.

With elders and very young among the crowds, the cramped passages with a wall on one side and high iron railing on the other led to army and police personnel having to intervene to rescue some of the devotees who were suffering from heat exhaustion and anxiety among the crowd.

Some of the children had to be lifted above the iron railings by security forces personnel which also led to anxiety for the children and parents as they were separated, with each on either side of the fence.

Children and the elderly were the most affected as they fought for some breathing space among the large crowds.

There were no plans for emergency evacuations in case of a stampede or a medical requirement which made the situation more dangerous.

Several of the devotees expressed anger at the poor organising for an event of this scale and hoped that measures will be taken to make the next few days of the exposition continue in a smooth manner.
