Following the immense success of 2000 historical blockbuster ‘Gladiator’, Ridley Scott’s much-awaited ‘Gladiator II’ is now being screened in theatres in Colombo and around Sri Lanka.

Despite being a worldwide box-office, the original ‘Gladiator’ was nominated for 12 awards at the 73rd Academy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on March 25, 2001 and the film won five including the Best Picture. The other awards the film won were the Best Actor (Russell Crowe), Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
After 24 years, Scott has returned with Gladiator II, a story that depicts years after witnessing the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle how Lucius enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honour needed to return the glory of Rome to its people.
Produced by Scott Free Productions and distributed by Paramount Picturesm it stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Jacobi and Nielsen reprise their roles from the first film, with Mescal replacing Spencer Treat Clark.
‘Gladiator II’ had its world premiere in Sydney, Australia on October 30 and it was released in the United Kingdom on November 15. In line with the United States and the worldwide release, it was released here on November 22.
