Foreign Minister attends funeral of Iranian President

Foreign Affairs Minister M.U.M. Ali Sabry led a high level delegation to Teheran on May 22 to participate at the state funeral of President Dr. Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other senior Iranian officials.

The Foreign Minister conveyed condolences on the tragic demise of the Iranian President and entourage on behalf of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the people of Sri Lanka, to Interim President Dr. Mohammad Mokhber and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ali Bagheri Kani and other senior officials.

In Teheran, Foreign Minister who represented Sri Lanka at the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi expressing his condolences to Iran's Interim President Mohammad Mokhber.

The Foreign Minister also handed over a condolence message addressed to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Dr. Seyyed Ali Khamenei from President Wickremesinghe to Interim President Dr. Mohammad Mokhber. The Interim President appreciated the visit of the high level delegation and thanked President Wickremesinghe for his condolence message.

Mr. Sabry and entourage paid their respects to Dr. Raisi and Dr. Amir Abdollahian at the Islamic Conference Hall in Tehran amidst a large gathering of foreign dignitaries and other high-ranking officials.

The Government of Sri Lanka declared May 21 as a day of national mourning.

Recalling the visit of President Raisi and Dr. Amirabdollahian to Sri Lanka last month, Minister Sabry underscored their vital role in advancing the bilateral relations between the two countries. The Foreign Minister also commended their positive contribution in the international fora.

Member of Parliament Marjan Faleel and Additional Secretary for Middle East and Multilateral Affairs of the Foreign Ministry U. L. Mohammed Jauhar accompanied the Foreign Minister in his visit to Tehran.

In Colombo, on Wednesday religious observances were held at the Kollupitiya Jumma mosque to invoke blessings on the late Iranian president who visited the mosque last month when he was in Sri Lanka to open the Uma Oya project. Iranian Ambassador Alireza Delkhosh is seen taking part in the event. Pix by Akila Jayawardena
