Hayleys to implement first power wheeling project
Hayleys PLC to implement the first ever Power Wheeling project in Sri Lanka after it was sanctioned by the Government recently.
The project is to be planned at the Badalgama site of its subsidiary Haycarb PLC, top officials told the Business Times on Wednesday.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved to accept the method of Power Wheeling, where an entity is allowed to use electricity supply from different locations using the existing grid for payment at low energy costs mid-this month, exclusively for new Renewable Energy projects. This is under the net metering method and to provide regulatory power to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to determine wheeling charges (Net Work Utilisation Fee).
This will enable large-scale customers to meet their electricity requirements through generation from their renewable energy plants situated elsewhere, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said.
Haycarb operates six activated carbon manufacturing locations in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Indonesia. The Haycarb Badalgama facility is designed for the manufacture of standard and value-added carbons and includes washing and pellet carbon manufacturing facilities. “Setting up the power wheeling facility will allow the company, to generate electricity in the best location, especially renewable energy like wind and solar, and transmit it to where it is needed, enabling Hayleys to invest in the most appropriate area,” a company official said.
