No tensions too tough for Ceylon Tea

Ceylon tea is travelling to markets that have seen tensions escalating in the recent weeks in locations like West Asia.

Sri Lanka markets its main orthodox teas expensive but in high demand to the West Asian region countries like Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya, Kuwait, Israel , Iraq, UAE and Turkey.

Tensions in these countries have been escalating but tea exporters say that this will not impact on the country’s key exporting crop due to the fact that it will continue to be in demand.

On the contrary the industry wants to ensure that there is more production in a bid to overcome the current shortages of tea at the auction.

Sri Lanka has in the past been producing 300 million kg of teas annually for the export market but in the past few years this figure has dropped to 250 million kg.

It is learnt that sanctions in the region by the US could impact on trade but Sri Lanka has always found trading routes into the West Asian region and in fact its tea sales to Iran a country that is heavily sanctioned is selling tea by bartering tea for oil.

Exporters state that they are confident that despite the growing tensions the demand will continue to sustain as in the past.
