Mankuliya bridge: A disaster waiting to happen

View(s):

The Mankuliya bridge connecting Wattala and Negombo
is in a dilapidated state.

Many use this bridge to travel to the airport, religious sites, and the famous Negombo fish market.

An activist in the area, Jayatissa Rodrigo, said the Road Development Authority (RDA) had put up a sign informing the public that the bridge was not suitable for use. However, vehicles continue to travel on the bridge. “We cannot blame motorists, as there is no alternative route,” he said.

“We informed responsible authorities and MPs in the area, but there has been no response,” he said, adding that repairs alone won’t do but that the bridge had to be rebuilt. “Authorities will only open their eyes once the bridge falls apart and lives are lost,” he said.
