Mid-day meal to be provided in 9,000 primary schools
View(s):A mid-day meal programme in 9,000 primary schools will be launched from Monday under a fresh government initiative to provide meals for students.
Rs 16.6 billion has been allocated for the programme which is expected to feed 1.6 million students.
All primary schools will receive mid-day meals under the programme, while national schools have been told to launch their own programmes with their own funding.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha will launch the programme. Governors will launch the programme in their provinces.
Although the scheme is aimed at benefiting students in Grades 1-5 in primary schools, students up to Grade 13 in some schools will also benefit from the scheme.
Minister Premajayantha said that during a recent event of the World Food Programme in France an agreement was reached in relation to providing meals to students, and under the programme funding will be available.
International and local agencies will also assist in the programme. He said that next year a higher allocation for the programme is expected.
Health authorities have expressed concern about the nutrition of students.
