Nethmi, Dewmi help Sri Lanka clinch Women’s U-19 Tri-Nation title

Nethmi Senaratne and Dewmi Wijeratne were the heroines of the Sri Lanka Women’s U-19 team in them clinching the Women’s U19 Tri-Nation T20 title as the duo put in sterling performances to help the side record a comfortable 36-run win over host Bangladesh Women’s U-19 in the final played at the Sheik Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Nethmi slammed a quick 57-ball 66, which included eight boundaries, laying the foundation for the win while Dewmi performed an allround performance as she cracked 49 in 42 balls that comprised two boundaries and four sixes. She also went on to bag three scalps to restrict the opponents in their run chase.

Sri Lanka Women’s U-19 taking first lease of the wicket saw Nethmi and Dewmi giving the side a sound start of 104 runs in only 86 balls for them to end with a formidable score of 148 for 3.

Later Dewmi, who ended with impressive figures of 3 for 13 in her four overs and was supported by Madushani Herath and Rismi Sanjana, who shared four wickets between them as they succeeded to restrict the hosts for a score of 112 runs.

This is the first time ever that a women’s U-19 team won an international cricket tournament. The champion team was coached by the experienced Mahesh Weerasinghe, who has produced over 60 champion teams in the school, domestic and mercantile tournaments.

Sri Lanka Women’s U-19 player Dewmi Wijeratne representing Bopitiya MV, Giriulla in the Inter-Schools Domestic Tournaments was adjudged the player of the final for her allround performance while Rabeya of the Bangladesh Women’s U-19 was adjudged the player of the tournament.
