A pilot project to introduce education reforms will be launched in 100 schools in the next school term before they are fully implemented across all schools next year.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha is expected to discuss the 41-point proposal with President Ranil Wickremesinghe before it is presented to Parliament for approval, the Education Times learns.

Among the key reforms will be the reduction of the number of subjects for the GCE Ordinary Level, the introduction of subjects such as logistics, and the reduction of the number of term tests. The reforms also promote self-learning systems.

The issue of a certificate stating that a student has completed the G.C.E. (O/L) or A/L instead of mentioning that the student has failed the examination is another recommendation in the proposed reforms.

The expansion of STEM education—a teaching approach that combines science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—is also among the proposals.

Under the proposed reforms, the O/L and A/L examinations will be conducted in such a manner that the student can enter the university at the age of 18.

For the pilot project, grades one, six, and 10 of 50 primary schools and 50 secondary schools have been selected to represent a cross-section of the country.

The reforms due to be introduced in 2025 will be revised after eight years.  (DWI)
