The Colombo Port has achieved a 27.7 per cent increase in transshipment volumes in January compared to the same month last year.

This increase in volumes has been recorded as a result of the current Red Sea crisis with more ships calling at the Colombo Port with more transshipment volumes diverting their containers from the port on feeder vessels to other destinations.

This, the Colombo Port says, is a result of the increase in volumes in transshipment traffic that has increased by 89,778 to reach 236571 TEUs at the Jaya Container Terminal, a 10.5 per cent or 13,437 TEUs increase in volumes reaching 141,971 TEUs at the South Asia Gateway Terminal (SAGT) and 17.4 per cent or 45,545 TEUs increase reaching 306,664 TEUs at Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT).

The total increase in volumes at the Colombo Port has reached 685,206 TEUs which is a 27.7 per cent increase compared to last year with about 203 vessels calling at the port.

In the meantime, the Hambantota International Port (HIP) has recorded a significant 26 per cent increase compared to the 2022 figures handling 700,000 transshipment vehicles.

It was also noted that the HIP was capable of attracting Japanese lines which were more focused only on handling domestic import cargo.
