A plan to scrap Grade 13 from the school education system has been shelved, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

Under the proposed education reforms, Grade 13 in schools was due to be scrapped, enabling students to complete school earlier.

He said it was difficult to implement the reform at this point.

He said that the National Institute of Education (NIE) had they have pointed out that it was not possible to make such changes immediately.

Prof Prasad Sethunga said that the international benchmark was that students should reach 18 years of age while receiving school education and before they enter university, and therefore the existing system was better.

He said, instead, the government should work to reduce gaps by conducting examinations on time and enabling students to enter university on time. -DWI
