CEB should take a leaf from Norway and upgrade our hydropower assets

Norway’s Statkraft has recently announced they are spending € 700 Million upgrading their hydropower dams to help them to withstand heavier rains and high-lightning risks posed by climate change.

Their chief executive stated, “We have several projects to strengthen our dams so that they can be resistant to extreme rain to an extent we have not had before.”
I think it’s high time the CEB takes similar steps by urgently carrying out a risk assessment on their hydropower assets and take the necessary action as Norway’s Statkraft is doing.
If this is not done, it will not just be catastrophic for the country’s energy security but also be disastrous for the agriculture sector.

Thank you for invaluable gift from the Bell family

The Bell family deserve our thanks for returning so many of H.C.P. Bell’s  Archaeological Survey Annual Reports to

Sri Lanka (Plus Section, December 31). The reports were originally published by the Government Printer in Colombo, incidentally at a cost of Rs 2.50, and copies would have been sent to the main libraries and the Museum.

Bell’s reports were very thorough. He described what the excavations entailed and how they were undertaken. The discoveries were described in meticulous detail. The significance of the findings were assessed by comparing with historical texts, particularly the Mahawansa. The reports were, however, sometimes late. The 1905 report was not published till 1909.

I hope an enterprising publisher will scan pages from these volumes and publish a single volume in tribute to H.C.P. Bell – the Englishman who devoted his career to the study of Sri Lanka’s ancient sites.
