Programme to promote national unity in education system
View(s):The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation together with the Education Ministry and the National Institute of Education is to implement a programme on promoting national unity within the school system. This was announced when the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation was discussed at the Sectoral Oversight Committee in Parliament recently.
Initially, 67 trilingual schools in the country will be selected for the programme, officials of the Office for National Unity said.
The Committee’s attention was directed at getting the school system legally involved in the Bill.
The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation Bill was presented by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms on October 17. The Bill states the need to implement programmes to strengthen the governance, policies and curricula to promote reconciliation and social cohesion in the education system including schools, both public and private universities, tertiary and vocational education institutions.
Chairman of the Committee, Dilan Perera said the Committee plans on discussions with Ministers of Education and Justice on the successful implementation of such programmes and is to invite youth representatives in next meetings. -NF
