A two-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at a guest house in Bentota, Police said.
The incident occurred last Sunday around 7 p.m. when the boy had wandered into the pool area unnoticed by the parents, Bentota OIC Thusitha Kariyawasam said.
The family residing in Colombo was on a holiday in Bentota. Police said the boy had been in a room unattended, and he had opened the door and gone out.
Around 9 p.m., when the parents had gone to the room, as dinner had been prepared, they found the boy missing. The boy was found drowned in the pool.
The child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on admission.
The Judicial Medical Officer, S.K. Suriyakumara, said death was due to asphyxiation due to drowning without conducting a postmortem inquiry.
The inquirer into sudden deaths at the Bentota hospital, K.V.D. Upali Kumarasinghe, also concluded that death was due to drowning.
