The Maimonides Medical Center (MMC), one of the leading hospitals in New York city, honoured a Sri Lankan physician. Dr. Kadirawel Iswara, by dedicating the Ambulatory Surgery Waiting Room in his name.

The Medical Center commemorated 50 years of “generosity, service, and excellence in patient care, teaching, leadership, and civic service” in a tribute to Dr. Iswara, described as “a true luminary in the field of gastroenterology”.

A recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Clinician Award in Private Practice from the American Gastroenterological Association, Dr Iswara was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of gastroenterology and his unwavering dedication to patient care at Maimonides Medical Center.

Kenneth Gibbs, President and CEO of Maimonides Medical Center, said, “Dr. Iswara is a true pioneer in the field, and receiving the Distinguished Clinician Award is a testament to the decades of clinical excellence and commitment to providing top-tier care. Beyond his numerous accolades and contributions, Dr. Iswara’s exceptional legacy will continue to benefit the Gastroenterology Department, which he has led with distinction for many years.”

The waiting room was officially named “Dr Kadirawel Iswara Reception Lobby.”

The special event was attended by Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United Nations, Mohan Pieris, Deputy Ambassador Sugheswara Gunaratne, former Transit Police Chief Joe Fox, representatives of Mayor Eric Adams, and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis.

Mayor Adams declared October 12th as “Kadirawel Iswara Day” in New York City, recognizing the doctor’s exceptional contributions to the community. Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis awarded a special congressional recognition to Dr. Iswara for his dedicated service to the community and the country. Ambassador Mohan Peiris paid tribute to Dr. Iswara’s service to the community, military service, and his invaluable assistance during the Sri Lankan tsunami.
