E.K.G. Wijewardena, who had served the Association of Cricket Umpires in Sri Lanka (ACU) for nearly 50 years, passed away after a brief illness at the age of 82. Having had his education at Zahira College in the early 1950s, ‘EKG’ joined the clerical staff of the C.W.E., where he played for the Nationalised Services.

He joined the ACU in 1974 and umpired all grades of matches efficiently and was selected to the international panel. After finishing his international career at 60, he joined the newly formed Cricket Umpires’ Association and did a commendable service with his close friend J.W.K. Boteju. I was able to associate him when I joined the ACU in 1985. He was a teacher to me and was also so lovely, and a humble friend. Everyone talks good of him, and his demise is a great loss to the Umpires’ Association.

May he attain the noble bliss of Nibbana!
