On Thursday the 27th of July, the Academy of Design (Aod) had the pleasure of welcoming Northumbria University’s (NU) newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andy Long, to its campus at the Colombo Innovation Tower (CIT). This visit marks 13 years of the Aod-NU partnership, and cements further the institutions’ long-standing relationship as purveyors of exemplary design education.

Professor Long saw the university awarded the title of University of the Year 2022 at the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards, and also the impressive seven place rise to rank 36th in the UK in the latest Complete University Guide. More recently the prestigious education institution was ranked in the top 10 across the whole of the UK in the 2023 Best Universities awards by StudentCrowd – the only awards based solely on student reviews.

During his visit, Professor Long was welcomed by Prof. Thomass Atkinson, Director of Academic Affairs, AOD and Mrs. Ishara Wijemanne, General Manager of AOD/ Design Corp at Aod, and then taken on a tour of the university’s world-class campus, before being given the opportunity to also meet with both students and members of Aod’s diverse faculty of educators. The Vice Chancellor was then familiarised with student work varied from 1st year to final – all of which were of exceptional standard that impressed the Vice Chancellor from all design departments, learning more also of how the university’s We The New Global enrolment theme for 2023 can be reflected and incorporated into real-world applications. Here Professor Long was able  to witness Build up could be about how NU saw that AOD is more than a campus but has created its own impact driven design ecosystem that extends opportunities to students as well as the community and contribute to the country’s economy through industry….how this is evident through the work of the student body, and AOD’s approach to design education… for himself how Sri Lanka’s pioneering design university’s impact-driven mission has deeply influenced its student body.

“Through this partnership with Northumbria AOD students are able to access internationally renowned higher education. AOD has established itself as a pioneer of design in Sri Lanka and the value it brings to our partnership has enabled it to become a creative force in the growth of design both as an educational and a dynamic profession in Sri Lanka and in south asia.

AOD’s impact driven vision allows to nurture talent that leverages design for impact and preserves heritage craft. Northumbria’s proud to support AOD’s commitment to uplifting livelihoods and empowering women as well as producing work to support the sustainability in general in Sri Lanka. As we look to the future we aim to continue collaborating with AOD and to grow together as leaders in the design space in Sri Lanka.” Professor Andy Long, Vice Chancellor, Northumbria University.

NU’s global footprint spans 17 institutions across 10 countries, resulting in an over 250,000 alumni community and unlocking potential across the world. What makes Aod stand out from other NU affiliates however, is that it is the only NU-affiliated design education institution in the world – both universities connected by the same vision and drive to build an innovative community of designers with the potential to create a positive social impact in this fast-evolving world.

In turn, Aod’s reputed stature as a powerhouse of innovation in South Asia has helped elevate NU’s global standing, together playing a vital role in fostering a unique and connected global design ecosystem that empowers future designers to build their careers in impactful fields.
