The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC) has announced the launch of a new project aimed at combating Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBVH) in the workplace.

Building on the success of previous efforts, this project seeks to increase awareness among women professionals and entrepreneurs of their rights and encourage organisations to develop a
fair treatment system for women, according to a WCIC media release.

The new project will be managed by WCIC Board Members Sarrah Sammoon, WCIC Policy Advocacy Lead, and Tusitha Kumarakulasingam, Jt. Secretary and Strategic Consultant.

“Our goal is to promote a culture of gender equality and safety from GBVH among member organisations,” said Anoji De Silva, WCIC Chairperson. “Through this initiative, we hope to create awareness among women about their rights, options for acting against workplace violence and harassment, and the authorities established in Sri Lanka to support women and the procedures to be taken.”

Ms. Sammoon said, “We hope to drive meaningful change and contribute to a safer work environment for women across Sri Lanka.” Added Ms. Kumarakulasingam, “This project is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness, provide resources, and support the development of policies that address GBVH. We look forward to working with our member organisations and seeing the positive impact of our efforts.”

The new project includes a series of workshops, educational programmes, and resources for WCIC members. The workshops will cover Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBVH) and the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 190 (ILO C190). Participants will learn how to recognise and address GBVH and advocate for additional support to encourage the Sri Lankan government to adopt ILO C190.

During the workshops, WCIC will provide resources to its members, such as lists of organisations that offer legal, psychological support, and other services to combat GBVH. They will also collaborate with attendees to gain a deeper understanding of existing workplace policies aimed at preventing GBVH and create a sample template for company policies and procedures that address GBVH.
