Cabinet amends concession given to public servants

Seniority in service won’t be considered for those who take leave to work elsewhere

The recent concession given to public sector employees to obtain long-term leave without affecting their seniority has been amended by the Ministry of Public Administration.

The move comes following complaints by serving officers who argue that the provision was unfair by those currently serving in the state sector as those who have obtained leave would be gaining seniority even during their period of leave.

Accordingly, the Cabinet took up the issue and decided to overturn the concession of seniority in service while retaining the scheme of allowing five years of no-pay leave. The pension too would not be affected by obtaining leave.

The Cabinet also took into consideration that the requirement to encourage public sector employees to travel overseas for employment was no longer required in view of the improvement in the economic situation.

The new circular will not be applicable for leave taken prior to July 11 this year. As part of measures to overcome the economic crisis, the facility was initially granted by a circular issued on September 15 last year, allowing public sector employees to obtain leave and work in Sri Lanka or abroad.

More than 2,000 public sector employees have made use of the benefit to travel overseas.
