A committee to formulate a strategy for utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) for 2023-2028 had begun its sittings from mid-June.

The Government has considered the need for a timely adoption of AI in key sectors of the economy. This consideration followed a meeting held between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and industry experts, academia, private and government sector officials in April.

The meeting was held to obtain expert views on AI, and to determine the approach to be taken by the Government in order to create a strategy for using AI.

Experts had expressed the need for a clear roadmap with a specific action plan which could be followed by them. Therefore, a committee consisting of experts in AI, academia, economists as well as legal and finance experts was formed by the Secretary to the President in order to formulate an AI strategy for Sri Lanka within a 3-4 month period.

The committee operates under the Presidential Secretariat, and is chaired by Group Chief Analytics and AI Officer, Dialog Axiata Dr Romesh Ranawana.

The committee consists of 21 members including: Prof Sirimal Abeyratne, Prof Asoka Karunananda, Dr Dushni Weerakoon, Prof N K Wickramarachchi, Prof Roshan Raegal, Ashique Ali, and Jayantha Fernando.

The work of the committee on formulating the strategy for AI use in Sri Lanka for 2023-2028 commenced under four sub-committees: Policy, Finance, Legal and Research.

The committee is to recommend strategies to transform Sri Lanka into a leading hub for AI innovation and utilisation, driving sustainable economic growth in sectors, enhancing public sector efficiency, developing AI skills and talent, fostering supportive research, and ensuring inclusive access to the benefits of AI for all segments of society.

The committee is also expected to recommend short-term, high impact projects and initiatives towards positioning Sri Lanka in the global AI Readiness Index ranking, while initiating collaborations internationally.
