A US-based educational system – STEAM education – is to be introduced in all grades of schools, Prof Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne, Director General of the National Institute of Education told the Sunday Times.

STEAM is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking.

The system will be introduced in all schools by the next term.

All Zonal Education Directors were summoned this week to Colombo and were briefed about the new system, while some 200,000 teachers are due to undergo training.

Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, innovativeness, entrepreneurship and collaboration team work will be among the areas of concentration.

Prof Nawaratne said that the practical aspects in this education system is higher than the theory aspect.

He said that this is the first US education system being introduced following a study of several years about the system.

More than 100 countries are currently using the system successfully.

Digital learning is one of the areas of concentration, under which, students are expected to do their own research.

“It is a change of the system from the traditional teaching-learning system, giving a better opportunity of practical learning,” Prof Nawaratne said.

He said there would be lots of group activities and 70 per cent of the marks will come through group work followed by 30 per cent theory.

The system will be introduced from Grade 1 to A/L classes. (DWI)
