While turbulent times are prevalent in any economy around the world, it is the network and the relationship one builds with another that plays a pivotal role for successful businesses, says Dr. Ivan Misner, Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of Business Network International (BNI).

Delivering the keynote address at the BNI National Conference held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo on Wednesday, Dr. Misner said: “You need to act local and build global while having the right mindset and the right skills set.” He stressed that more than 90 per cent of people (survey done with 12,000 people) revealed that networking plays a vital role for successful businesses.

Dr. Misner highlighted that building a network is part of the butterfly effect. “You need to follow the ripples of building a network while it is important to have diversity and understand the process of passing through visibility, credibility and profitability,” he noted.

Through his survey, he revealed that, on average people spend around six and half hours per week on networking while men spend around 6.44 hours and women spend around 6.19 hours per week. Interestingly, though women spend less time networking, they generate more business than the men, he noted.

On how to keep intact in building a network, he explained three important steps. First, within 24 hours of meeting an individual in person, send an email. Secondly, in seven days connect with them on any social media network. Thirdly in 30 days, set a day to meet in person.

BNI has reached more than 300,000 members in nearly four decades and is present in more than 70 countries across 10,927 chapters. Last year alone BNI Global facilitated over US$ 21.7 billion in referral business. In Sri Lanka, the BNI network comprises 13 chapters across the country, with over 400 members and is growing. In the last 12 months, BNI Sri Lanka has locally passed over 26,190 referrals, generating over Rs. 4.45 billion in closed business for its members.
