The Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) has just received request from large corporates

in the country to develop products and processes.

Thushara Vajira Perera, Director SLINTEC told the Business Times that this happened after the ‘Analytical Hub’, was held as an event to showcase the capabilities of the institution’s analytical services to meet challenges of the future. “We had close to 100 industry representatives from corporates participating at this event, which we named Unlocking the Potential: Exploring SLINTEC Analytical Hub
and which was held on May 31 at the National Science Foundation Auditorium in Colombo.”

Representatives from the textile, minerals, automotive, fibre optic-activated
carbon, fast moving consumer goods, and pharmaceutical industries participated in the event.

Most of the companies had requests to SLINTEC to do products for them. “Some of the companies were very keen to do automotive industry-related products such as coolants, oils, grease, and brake fluids,” Mr. Perera said. He added that the Export Development Board is to meet the SLINTEC team on Monday. “At this meeting, we aim to explore how to develop science and technology products with Singapore. The opportunity for us here is to be the scale-up country for these firms in Singapore who find it difficult to expand while we have the space, trained staff, and all the up-to-date and futuristic equipment. What’s more, their IP in Sri Lanka is guaranteed to be secure.”

The Parliament subcommittee on fertiliser is slated to meet on SLINTEC’s slow releasing fertiliser next week. The Business Times reported this on June 4. “It was found that rice grows better with this fertiliser. As the fertiliser dissolves slowly, there is no need to add multiple rounds of it, unlike in traditional fertiliser,” Mr. Perera said. He also said that similar growth in tea has been shown in the Uva province and low-country tea estates. “This fertiliser has increased its yield by 20 per cent.”

The four areas that SLINTEC currently concentrates on are developing antimicrobial and antifungal products, exploring the potential of Cinnamon in managing diabetes mellitus, screening Ayurvedic Concoctions, and tea-related work.
