Dinuru, Viran shine in Matara’s win
A century by Diniru Abeywickramasinghe and Viran Chamuditha’s fifty helped Matara record a close 15-run win over Galle Zone 3 in a high-scoring match of the Under-19 Provincial Youth League Limited Over Tournament played at Matara.
Diniru slammed an unbeaten 145 in 150 balls that included 12 boundaries and four sixes while Viran hit 63 in 85 balls with six boundaries and a six. The pair came to the rescue of the side when they were struggling on 67 for 7 in the 16th over by sharing a valuable 170-run stand for the eighth wicket to help Matara end with a formidable score of 270 for 9.
Galle Zone 3 in their run chase was making steady progress and despite a partnership of 71 runs for the fifth wicket between Ravishan Nethsara (66) and Chanuka de Silva. They lost wickets at regular intervals and was restricted for a score of 255 which ensured Matara’s third win of the tournament.
Galle Zone 1 too recorded their third win of the tournament with a comfortable 89-run win over Galle Zone 2 at Karandeniya. Batting first Galle Zone 1 posted 255-3 helped by half tons from Dhanuja Induwara and Hiruna Mandila. Galle Zone was bowled out for 166 with Tharusha Dilshan and Indiwara Udena doing most of the damage.
Badulla and Ratnapura featured in a tie when both sides made scores of 138 at Monaragala. This was the second match to end in a tie with the first being between Galle Zone 2 and Galle Zone 3 making 165 runs each.
