Nearly 2300 athletes are expected to feature at the 63rd National Junior Athletics Championship, that will set off today at Diyagama. The meet that also serves as a trial for the upcoming Youth Commonwealth Games will run for four days, ending on May 10.

Events will be held in Under-23, 20, 18 and 16 age categories in the first domestic competition that is to be held following the recent successful Asian Youth Athletic Championship held in Uzbekistan, where Sri Lanka won two silver and bronze medals each, fielding seven athletes. This meet is focused selecting potential athletes for the national pools aiming the forthcoming international commitments of Sri Lanka – the Asian Athletic Championship, Asian Games as well as the junior meets to be held regionally and
globally.
