Creative cross to bring home the message of Christ’s sacrifice
Today is Easter Sunday, when Christians the world over rejoice in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death on the cross on Good Friday. A novel cross on display at the Wellawatte Methodist Church brought home the message of Christ’s great sacrifice to save humankind.
The tall colourful cross displays palm prints of the members of the Wellawatte Methodist Church Vintage Club, each palm print carrying a specific Biblical message. These colourful palm prints cover the entire upright post and the cross beam of the cross.
On Good Friday, Jesus was forced to carry his own cross to Golgotha where He was crucified between two thieves, even though He was innocent of any sin. Simon of Cyrene was the man compelled by the Romans to carry the cross as Jesus was taken on foot to his crucifixion. Illustrating this help given by Simon, members of the Vintage Club designed imprints of their palms to depict their raising of hands to help carry this heavy cross to signify that we too share and take part in Christ’s dreadful journey to Calvary to redeem us of our sins.
The cross was the brainchild of Sumitha, wife of Rev. Kingsley Weerasinghe – the Minister in charge of the Wellawatte Methodist Church.
