UN vote on Ukraine war: Lanka abstains along with China, India

Sri Lanka joined China, India, and 29 other countries to abstain from Thursday’s voting when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted overwhelmingly for a resolution calling for Russia’s withdrawal from Ukraine as the war entered its second year on Friday.

In all, 141 countries supported the resolution. Seven opposed it — Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Syria, Mali, Eritrea and Nicaragua.

Those who abstained also include South Africa, Pakistan, and others from Africa and Central Asia.

Asked why Sri Lanka abstained from voting, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said there was no hidden agenda behind Sri Lanka’s move. “We stuck by the position we have taken earlier,” he said referring to Sri Lanka’s abstentions during UN General Assembly resolutions
on Ukraine since the war began
last year.

India, too, has been abstaining during votes on the Russia-Ukraine war.

The level of support for Friday’s resolution was similar to previous General Assembly votes relating to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, UN sources said. Mali and Eritrea moved from abstaining to voting against the resolution.

Before the vote, many
countries, including the US, Germany and Ukraine, reached out to India seeking its support for
the resolution.
