As part of the Sri Lanka Malay Association’s centenary celebrations, ‘Pasar Malam’, a hawker-street-style food and cultural festival will be held on February 26 – a rare opportunity  to experience the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lankan Malays.

“The evening will be a cultural extravaganza. Demonstrations of exotic cuisine and secret recipes will provide the audience an exciting experience with over 40 stalls and a special kiddies’ corner,” said Chairperson of the SLMA’s Women’s Affairs Committee, Hashmareen Bangsajayah.

Pasar Malam will offer a unique culinary experience  as the Malay foods showcased are made with recipes passed down from generation to generation — from the much-loved beef satay, babath puruth (tripe and offal) curry, dodol, coconut rock, and more.

There will be retails stalls as well, some selling traditional Malay outfits, batik shirts and songkoks (hats), and other souvenirs.

Those who visit can also gain insight into the history and customs of Sri Lankan Malays as there will be various performances throughout the night showcasing traditional dance, song, a fashion show, and more.

The SLMA is driven by its Social Services, Literary & Cultural Affairs, Religious Affairs, Women’s Affairs, and Research and Documentation Studies & Communication committees that work tirelessly to ensure that the community is well supported. Pasar Malam is one of their main fundraisers for their welfare and charity projects for the year and proceeds will go to help the less privileged in the community.

Pasar Malam will take place on February 26 at the Padang Complex, off Kew Road, Colombo 2 from 5 p.m. onwards!
