With the local government elections due, attention has been drawn to the facilities provided to residents living in the respective  local council areas.

Colombo City is among the areas in focus. One such location is the area around the Slave Island railway where construction activities are underway.

Those rushing to the Slave Island railway station have their shoes soaked in drainage water seeping on the road leading to the railway station along Justice Akbar Mawatha. The majority of the pedestrians complain of a stench emitting from the drain water leading them to hop and skip to avoid trampling the dirty water. During rush hour, many ignore the hazard as they run to catch the train despite their feet getting drenched in drainage water.

Employees of food outlets too complain about the smell that drives customers away. With a lack of space in households, many children play on the roads during the evening hours, residents complain.

M S M Maharoof, a resident of Justice Akbar Mawatha said when water overflows the Colombo Municipal Council workers temporarily fix it, making it a regular occurrence.

“Hundreds and thousands of people use this road. Both State and private sector employees use the Slave Island railway station making it busier during office hours. There needs to be a permanent solution,” he said.

P M Nadaraj said assurance was given by authorities to end the overflowing drainage issues. “This is an important street in the city.

There are food boutiques and businesses, a busy railway station as well as residents. The germs from drainage waters can reach offices and homes especially when people are rushing to and from work,” he said.
