After an unexpected two month postponement due to adverse weather, the much-awaited “Ace the Race” Triathlon and fun fair organised by the Ladies’ College Old Girls’ Association (OGA) took place on December 3.  Organised in partnership with G360 – a multi-sport event company, the triathlon was open to old girls, old boys, schoolchildren and non-LCites.

From the crack of dawn, eager participants of all age groups were flooding in, bursting with excitement and triathlon spirit.  Due to popular demand, slots for the race had re-opened and within a month or so there were triple the number of sign-ups: a final turn-out of 1280 participants with 356 teams for the triathlon and 200 teams for the aquathalon – another addition given the number of contestants.

“It was heartening to see this outdoor event connecting different families and friends, especially those from different schools,” said Principal of Ladies’ College Deepika Dassanaike. “It was a wonderful celebration of communities, faith, and friendship”

“The registrations were overwhelming,” remarked Roshanara Page, president of the LC OGA, “we were not expecting there to be such enthusiasm from the public, or the turnout there is today.”

The pandemic lockdown followed by the economic crisis, it was no surprise that there were so many with a thirst for friendly competition.  “It was such a wonderful sight to see so many families present,” said Roshara, proudly noting that their oldest participant was 83 years old and the youngest just 4. “At the end of the day, the event is not about competition, but completion.”

Present at the fair were a large amount of vendors from all over Colombo, with 71 stalls set up in the school back garden.  “There is a cross section of corporate stalls and household-generated produce stalls,” said Jovanka Jayaweera of the OGA.

The clubs, societies and committees of students at Ladies’ College also had their own stalls, with innovative games, food items and creative items.  All proceeds of the triathlon and fair are to be directed towards the refurbishment of the new and old hall, as well as to the OGA.
