Public officials who use personal mobile phones for data collection and application processing are to be paid an allowance at the rate of Rs 150 per application, and this will cost the government millions of rupees.

The scheme, approved by the Cabinet, will apply to Grama Niladharis, Samurdhi, and other development officials involved in the collection of data from the public.

The collection of Samurdhi recipients’ data alone would cost more than Rs 600 million if the officials use their mobile phones for data collection and processing applications, a senior government official said. Officials belonging to some 103 categories may be entitled to the allowance.
