Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) is upping the glam factor with their Luxury Edition on November 17, at the Galle Face Hotel. Aiming to focus on craftsmanship in design creation leading to sustainable luxury, this one-day event will explore the opportunity to increase the value of designed products through sustainable craftsmanship.

The Luxury Edition will feature designers Darshi Keertisena of Buddhi Batiks, Charini Suriyage, Sonali Dharmawardena, Fouzul Hameed, Aslam Hussein, Lovi Ceylon and Dinushi Pamanuwa.

Accompanying the event is Luxury Talks, a discussion featuring two personalities who create luxury products for both local and international markets.

Although the term luxury brings to mind lavish creations, it also goes beyond that to mean personalisation in craftsmanship, especially when a particular craft develops an identity for the country. At a press briefing held at the Galle Face Hotel this week, Founder and Managing Director of CFW Ajai Vir Singh spoke about the need to create high-value luxury products using the resources available and shift the focus to how those resources can be enhanced by designers. “If you look at luxury, it seems far and distant but most of the luxurious brands around the world started from small craft-based stores or shops or villages and were built up from there onward –  so why can’t we do that here?”

The difficulty in importing fabric pushes designers to take a look at their craftsmanship and up their game in terms of innovation. “How else can you look at your craftsmanship in times like this, that’s how design entrepreneurship starts,” says Ajai.
