While the world’s top mobile device manufacturing companies have released several white papers on 6G technology, Sri Lanka is still in its trial stage of deploying 5G technology. It requires huge investments in infrastructure to deploy 5G technology for a country like Sri Lanka.

Vivo Communication Technology Co Ltd, a Chinese multinational company, released its third white paper on 6G technology this week.

Expressing concerns and challenges on the 5G technology in Sri Lanka, Tamrakar Rakesh, Vivo 5G Standard Expert, during a zoom conversation with the Business Times said, “Being the first country in South Asia to try 5G technology, for a market like Sri Lanka huge investments in terms of infrastructure need to be put in place to deploy 5G technology.”

A 5G device cannot be very big, very heavy; it needs to support so many networks around the world. There are many components that need to be installed inside the device to make it happen. Designing such a device is very challenging, he added.

He also mentioned that Vivo has been working on prototype 6G devices while other mobile device manufacturing companies are doing their research individually. “Vivo is evolving and technology doesn’t stop evolving. For the consumer the physical and digital world come together in 6G technology. We invest heavily on technology to develop devices to serve consumers to make people’s life easy. It’s not always about business but the service to the society. Vivo has always been a consumer centric brand,” he noted.

Based on his expertise on 5G technology, he stated that 5G is the right technology for remote working or work from home concept. It will definitely help government institutions, health sector, educational institutions and so on.

“Globally we have noticed that consumers change their mobile phones every 18 months. From the mobile broadband service point of view, 5G technology can stream very high quality videos or video calls. From the industry point of view for self-driving cars you need 5G technology to support it,” noted Mr. Rakesh.
