Ushan Thiwanka Perera, the current record holder in Men’s High Jump in Sri Lanka and South Asia, will likely miss two important upcoming events – the IAAF World Championships and the Commonwealth Games 2022 Birmingham, according to sources.

USA based Ushan had reasoned out that with assistance coming, at the wrong time and wrong place, is the main reason behind his decision to give up both event, as he had not had ample competitions and exposure prior to them.

He has not had enough competitions in 2021 to earn qualification, despite clearing 2.30m and being among the top 16 in the world at that time. His fate in competitions was similar this year too, which had forced the former Maris Stella College jumper to take part in four category ‘F’ college competitions.

The 24-year-old jumper had to skip most events that he registered to compete in during the past 18 months, as local authorities had failed to promptly act on to his requests and requirements. Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Sports had granted him some assistance, but not at the time Ushan had needed them badly.
