Ceremonial Inauguration of the 51st Annual Sessions and 81st Anniversary Celebrations of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon

The Inauguration Ceremony of the 51st Annual Sessions and 81st Anniversary celebrations of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon was held on the 22nd of June 2022 at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 07. Mr. Asoka Hettigoda Chairman & Managing Director, Hettigoda group of Companies graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The ceremony began with a Welcome Address, followed by Presidential Address on the theme “Shaping Minds to Break Through Frontiers in Chemical Research” by Professor Srianthie A. Deraniyagala. Mr. Asoka Hettigoda, the Chief Guest, then addressed the audience, emphasising how Professional Chemists could help Sri Lanka overcome its current crisis. This was followed by the distribution of prizes for the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon Awards.

The Kandiah Memorial Award for Applied Chemistry was awarded to Ms. Yasuri Amarasekara and the Professor M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry was awarded to Ms. Imesha Lakmini Hettige while Dr. Gobika Thiripuranathar received the CCS Research Award for the year 2021. Recipients of scholarships, prizes, and awards of the BSc Hons in Chemical Science and Graduateship in Chemistry programmes were then recognised followed by the awarding of Colours to students who brought honour to the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon by competing in various inter-university events. The winners of the All-Island Inter-School Chemistry Quiz Competition, Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka, “Women in Chemistry” Essay Competition and Photo Abstract competition, the Inter-University Debating Competition and the Inter University Magic Competition were also provided with awards and certificates for their achievements. The inauguration ceremony concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. N M S Hettigedara, the President-Elect, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon.
