Government schools in the Colombo Education Zone and suburbs and those in main towns will be closed next week due to the current fuel crisis, the Education Ministry said yesterday.

The Provincial Education officials have been advised to continue classes at schools that have fewer students, depending on the situaiton. Principals of schools that have the ability to continue educational activities without an interruption caused by transport difficulties have been requested to discuss the issue with the respective Zonal Education Director and make arrangements.

The ministry has requested to organise online education for students who are unable to attend school.

The Education Ministry said the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka was requested to provide an uninterrupted power supply from 8am to 1pm to facilitate online education.

However, with one section of the Norochcholai power plant being shut down, PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake told the Sunday Times they had to work out a way to provide uninterrupted power supply during school hours for two weeks to facilitate online teaching.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry will have a review meeting next Saturday to decide whether schools should be closed next week also.

In addition, the University of Peradeniya was closed yesterday.
