The selection of some 500 students to the intermediary classes of national schools, has been halted by the newly appointed Education Minister Susil Premajayantha.

The move came after taking into consideration a complaint made by the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Professional Association (SLEASPA).

The Association had complained that the former Education Secretary Kapila Perera had back dated and issued the letters of admissions after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa announced his resignation and the Cabinet was dissolved.

A senior Education Ministry official said Minister Premajayantha who was alerted about the selections had stopped the implementation of the directive, After making his own inquiries.

The Association claimed that the Secretary had previously misused the power to select students to intermediary classes which excludes grade one and grade five. They said that enrolling more students than the number which can be accommodated in classrooms results in overcrowding and difficulties in teaching.

The intermediary classes were grade two, three, four, six, seven eight and nine.

Meanwhile Prof. Kapila Perera said the selections were done after requests were made either at ministerial level or at official level.

“I do not personally know these people,” he said.
