UGC to keep state campuses operational in spite of economic crisis

Plans have been drawn to keep the university system operative despite the fuel, cooking gas and medicine shortages having an impact on keeping the universities open, a University Grants Commission (UGC) official said recently.

The UGC is planning to keep the university system operational by maintaining online lectures if students are unable to attend physical lectures due to transport difficulties and difficulties in staying in hostels or boarding houses due to the non-availability of gas.

To support the UGC’s efforts to keep academic activities in progress, the World Bank is providing Rs three billion on concessionary terms. A similar facility amounting to Rs two billion was provided in December.

“The funds will be used to keep the university system running despite the difficulties faced by the country,” a senior UGC official said.

Under the plan they hoped to keep the universities open so exams and important administrative work could continue uninterrupted, he said.

There had been calls by various groups including academics, students and parents to close universities as students were facing accommodation problems.

Some boarding houses had informed students that they could not provide meals due to cooking gas shortages, and students were also unable to buy food as some eating places and restaurants have closed down.

The academic activities of universities had been affected during the past two years when campuses were closed due to the COVID-19 situation.

However, during the latter stages of the crisis, the UGC was able to revive the university education system by activating online education systems.
