While many of us are caught in the rat-race, there are those who have challenged this system by wiring their creative gear, mastering a skill and pursuing what they love. This week we feature four talented artists exploring different fields.

Doriend

You can revisit your cherished childhood days by going down memory lane through the doll brand, Doriend. Derived from the words doll friend, it is a brand focused on creating personalised dolls. Their dolls have gone from Sri Lanka to the USA, Australia, India, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE, and Qatar.

A business graduate Hasini Rajapakshe worked in many multi-national companies, however, found her true muse in doll making after  a process of continuous trial and error. Learning crafting skills from her mother, she decided to venture into  a soft toy brand centred around personal dolls. Her dolls are made to reveal the character of her customers with close attention to detail and careful stitch work to create a toy version of oneself. They can be further personalized with shoes, bags, caps, dress designs and hairstyles.

As her customer base expands from female to male and young to old, she is challenging the common misconception that dolls are a toy only for little girls. In the future, she hopes to have her own website to connect with customers.

You can contact her via Instagram and Facebook @doriend_srilanka.

“I saw an angel in the marble and carved to set it free,” said the Great master Michelangelo. 21-year-old Amna Rushdi is not working with marble but pebbles. She is the founder and owner of Pebble.lk

After gaining inspiration from Pinterest, she decided to embrace pebble art. Her most popular creation happens to be Pebbletoons where customers can cartoon themselves or any other character on a pebble. With close attention, it takes nearly 4-5 hours of hard work to begin the process of each creation, by engraving faces on a pebble.

During quarantine Veenadhvani Lekamge stumbled across the resin community of Instagram. Resin art is a craft created using resin and hardeners which result in a hardened product.

TwoPods.lk is an Epoxy resin home décor brand. Epoxy has the unique ability to mimic the look of stone and glass at a comparatively affordable cost.

While pursuing her corporate job full time she finds time to create, fusing fragments of nature like twigs and flowers with resin.
