With the new COVID-19 variant ‘Omicron’ showing a rapid increase in positive cases and the lack of Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits for urgent testing, a high level health official has said they have placed an order for one million and received 150,000 kits on Friday.    “We have selected two suppliers through the tender process for the supply of these test kits and one company informed us that it had got foreign exchange approval on Friday to import the kits,” said Dr. R.M. Saman Rathnayake, the Secretary to the State Ministry of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals.

He said the other company was awaiting approval to secure the necessary foreign exchange, from the Central Bank, for these imports.

This immediate purchase of RAT kits comes in the backdrop of a shortage faced by the health authorities.
